I find that leaving enough of an allowance can make the world of difference. If the allowance is to short, when the quilt is assembled, the edge may fray, which then creates a hole/gap on the front.
I use plain white paper for the hexagon quilt pieces. Some people use very thick card stock or even plastic, but I find with a light hand paper works just fine for me with nice sharp corners & edges. Click Here for free online graph paper to make hexes like the ones below. As you get more experienced you'll be able to make the hexes smaller and smaller.

Here is a Hexagon quilt block in progress!
I like using two variants of the same color. I think it makes a pretty flower! When planning your grandmothers flower garden quilt, try to think about the color scheme you want to use. The tradition color palate is made up of cheerful 1930's & 40's feed sack and calico small print bright fabrics!

Making the Quilt Cookies!
Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts are unique as you can make what I call the little quilt cookies, or hexagon quilt pieces as you go, and then sew them all together later. It is your choice if you want to make all the quilt cookies up front, or make one flower at a time.
It is one of the most portable quilt patters out there because all you really need are the little paper hexagons, fabric and needle and thread. It is great for road trips!

Start of Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt
Grandmother's flower garden quilts have a timeless appeal. The unique design of the quilt and the cheerful colors are a match made in heaven for every little girls room! This quilt is being started with 1930's reproduction fabrics! They are so cute and cheerful.
Although many different colors and fabric designs are used in the grandmother's flower garden quilt, it is important that everything is balanced and blends well.

Stay tunes as we add more blocks and different colors!
